The Evolution Of The Skateboard
January 1, 2010 Activities Comments OffThe skate board is a relatively modern toy where a sturdy set of axles, bearings and wheels are bolted on to a specially designed wooden plank that can be ridden similar to a surfboard. The most common measurements for skate boards is from 27 to 33 inches lengthwise and 7to 10 inches wide. Skate boards hit the market in the late 70’s and were instantly popular.
Skate boards are ridden by standing on the plank and pushing with one feet, it takes some balance and getting used to at first. They are not only used for skating but also for stunts. There are also those who ride downhill with them like the way snow boarders do, weaving around a course or around obstacles.
There is no regulatory body which decides what qualifies as a skate board and what does not. Generally the skate board follows contemporary trends and the design of the board is based on that. There is another type of skateboard called a long board and it is as the name suggests a longer version of the skate board designed for down hill riders.
If one were to trace the family tree of the skate board you could see its origins lay in depression era toy making ingenuity. Kids in that day faced with little choice as to what toys to have proceeded to manufacture their own, by sticking wheels to boxes. Some toy historians agree this may be the early idea for skate boards.
The long board is actually the first skate board. The basic concept had started in the early 1950’s as opposed to the 70’s for the regular skate board and it emerged along with the surfing culture of that time. In these times a variation of the long board called a mini long board is becoming popular. The idea behind it is to combine the ride comfort of the long board and the maneuverability of the skate board.
