Creating A Time Capsule Is An Enjoyable Moment To Bond With Kids

The capsule will contain irreplaceable things. Make sure to choose a sturdy container! It is also a good idea to choose one that is airtight and watertight.
The whole point of a time capsule is to seal up the memories inside for a period of years. The longer the better, because opening up a capsule too soon can be a disappointment. Patience can be hard for kids, though, especially for younger kids. Explain to them that the capsule needs to be put away for an extended period of time.
It is easiest to put the capsule somewhere out of the children’s reach, or to hide it from them. The capsule should be stored in this secure location for a period of years. Generally 5-10 years is a good timeframe.
At the start of the summer, w hen you make the container, sit down and brainstorm with the kids about what should go inside it. Possible items include:
Drawings and artwork, crafts, small toys, awards, letters, pebbles, essentially any small and durable item can be included. You will want to enclose photographs in photo-safe envelopes before putting them in the capsule, though, to keep them safe. If you use other media to record memories, such as DVDs or other tapes, you need to consider how long you are storing the capsule. Technology can become obsolete, especially if you are storing the capsule for ten years or more.
Don’t forget where you have stored your time capsule! It is easy to remember locations over a short period, but if you are storing the capsule for years and years it’s best to give yourself a reminder. Also, make sure you have reminders in place so that you don’t accidentally leave it behind if you move.
Don’t fill your capsule with news of the day taken from newspapers and magazines. You can always get reprints of old news. The capsule is designed to be personal and to bring back memories of family times together – choose items that remind you of times your family has had.
