The High-Paced And Fun Game Of Air Hockey

6:37 pm Activities

Like ping pong and pool, air hockey is a fun, table-based game that incorporates hand-eye coordination with strategy to win. A typical air hockey table is about 4′x6′ in size.

You’ll find the top of the air hockey table is unlike any other you’ll see. It has hundreds of tiny holes. These perforations allow air to flow through which lets the puck glide over the table in a smooth motion. The table mimics an ice hockey rink with its blue and red lines.

The game is played with one player be named the server. The server goes first and will shoot the puck across the table in an attempt to score a goal. The opponent tries to block the shot and score their own goal. The receiving player can only return the puck after it crosses over the centerline.

Don’t try to block any shots with your body. It’s not permissible within the rules of the game. Each player has just seven seconds to return the puck after it reaches their end of the table. Often players will observe their opponent and see if they establish a pattern. Then they try to counter it.

Air hockey tables have large side rails that serve two purposes – they are used to keep the puck from leaving the table and to allow players to bounce the puck against it while making a bank shot.

Each player has a goal to defend. The player’s goals are slots in the table where the puck has to slide into in order to be counted as a goal. The main objective of the game of air hockey is to use a flat mallet with a vertical handle to slide the puck toward the opposing goal. The person to reach the designated score total is the winner.

Sometimes players get lucky with a direct shot to the goal. Other times it is more challenging and a lot of volleying goes on. Players often have to angle the puck or misdirect their opponent to score successfully.

If you ever participate in an air hockey tournament you’ll find the tables are larger and players use more sophisticated strategies. Air hockey tables used in tournaments are larger and players use additional tactics to distract their opponents.
