Fuerteventura and water based sports

1:36 pm Activities

Fuerteventura is the second largest of the Canary Islands, the volcanic archipelago. Sitting in the Atlantic Ocean, it lies off the north west coast of Africa. The island is famous for it’s varied fauna and flora, explaining why it was named a biosphere reserve by UNESCO, in 2009. On top of this, however, it is also among the greatest places to come to enjoy watersports.

There are many reasons the island is popular for watersports. Firstly, it being a relatively small island, the length of coastline is disproportionately large compared to the islands surface area. This means that nowhere on the island is very far away from the coast, so wherever you stay, watersports are but a short journey away. Another reason is that the north west of the island enjoys excellent trade winds, which are great for water based sports.

These good trade winds, along with the differing water conditions from region to region, makes the island great for surfing, no matter what level of skill you have. There are waves that are perfect for those who have just started surfing, as well as those that will challenge even the most experienced. The constantly good water temperatures also make surfing very enjoyable.

This constant temperature also makes Fuerteventura a good place for diving. Even in the winter, the waters are warm enough to make diving comfortable, meaning you can concentrate on what you are looking at. Surrounding the island is crystal clear waters absolutely full of marine life of all different kinds; a view that will blow you away. There are shipwrecks and corals to explore from whichever piece of shoreline to set out from.

And this is just the beginning. There are plenty of other sports that the special conditions enjoyed by Fuerteventura cater for. There’s kite surfing, wind surfing, as well as jet skiing and other motor sports. Fuerteventura is an amazing place to indulge in watersports.
