If you are intending to spend time out walking or hiking then it is essential that you have the right equipment to ensure that you are safe and the trips you take are enjoyable. Along with making sure you have a good quality pair of boots to walk in there is other equipment you need including a rucksack into which provisions, clothing, a tent and sleeping can be put if you intend to be away from home for a while. But because there are so many different kinds of rucksacks now available it can prove a challenge to decide which one is right for you.

When it comes to buying a rucksack we offer some pointers below that you may find very useful and ensure that the one you get is right for you.

1. First off make sure that you sit down so that you can then work out what is going to be carried in it. This way you are in a better position to determine exactly what size rucksack you need. Although buying a big size may seem cost effective often you will over laden it and result in you carrying more than you actually need to so increasing the weight you are lifting. Whereas although you may think it is better to go for a smaller cheap size model this can prove a problem as well as you will often find that more of the equipment you need to take with you has to be secured to the outside of the rucksack. This results in the balance of the rucksack being altered and so more difficult to carry.

2. The next thing you need to look at is how well it fits on your back. So it is worthwhile trying out a number different makes and models that have some weight placed inside them. Ideally when it comes to trying out some put in around the same amount of weight that you would expect to be carrying when you go out with it.

3. As you try out the various rucksacks make sure that you check the straps provide your body with adequate support and help to distribute the weight inside evenly. Spend some time in the store with it. You need to lean backwards and forwards whilst wearing it to ensure that the weight remains well distributed inside along with you swaying from side to side. A rucksack that moves when you are doing this is going to cause you problems as your balance is going to be thrown off as you walk.

As well as walking around the store with a rucksack on your back look to see if there are any stairs that you can walk up and down. Again this will help you to discover if the weight inside still remains evenly distributed or not. Another thing to do this is it allows you to identify any minor problems with the rucksack that could become major ones when it has been carried by you for some time.

4. It is important that the straps on your rucksack are firm but come with lots of padding as this will help to ensure that when being carried it remains in the centre of your back at all times. Also the straps should be ones that fit snuggly but won’t prevent you from moving your arms or upper body easily.

5. When considering buying any of the rucksacks now available make sure that yours has a good hip belt fitted to it. This is crucial as this is what will be bearing most of the weight carried inside yours. By having a good fitting hip belt will also mean that when carrying yours it feels comfortable and helps to reduce the amount of strain being placed on your back.

As one can see there are a number of things one need to think about if one are looking to buy a rucksack that one want to use for outdoors activities such as hiking.
