The Joy Of Gathering Berries Every Summer Afternoon

5:30 pm Activities

When was the last time you went berry picking? Many people don’t realize that you can take a trip to a berry picking farm, and bring home the fruit that you pick. Come late summer, many varieties of berries are ready to be picked and this is the perfect time to plan your berry picking adventure.

Bring at least one bucket per person, including kids. If you plan on picking a large volume of berries, it is better to bring more buckets than you think you will need than to need more buckets and not have enough. Most berry picking farms ask that you bring your own buckets and will not have buckets available for use.

You’ll likely find strawberries, blueberries, or both when you arrive at the picking farm. These are the most popular fruits for growing at pick your own businesses. You can sometimes also find berries growing wild, especially blackberries and raspberries. Go ahead and pick these so long as they are not growing on private property.

Don’t wear clothes you want to keep nice, though. Berry juice stains, and it is certain you will end up with some juice on you. You’ll probably end up sitting down to pick because bending over for long periods can be tiring. Children also usually end up sitting on the ground. Even if you think you can be careful and not get juice on your clothes, it is best to wear items you are not very attached to.

Once you bring your berries home, make sure to wash them thoroughly. Then, you face a hard choice. With ripe summer berries, there are so many delicious options you may have trouble deciding how you want to eat them!

You may find you have more berries than you can use right away. This is not uncommon, the fun of picking can lead to bringing home more than you had planned. Fortunately, berries freeze well in freezer bags or airtight containers. Once you have frozen the extra berries, choose the ways you want to eat the rest.

You can eat many berries raw or cooked, depending on your preference. Some people like to have them plain, or with a bit of cream or milk. Other people sprinkle them on cereals, or mix them into oatmeal. Don’t be afraid to get creative with your berries. Berries can be baked into muffins and breads, be cooked down into preserves, be used as a filler between layers in a cake, and be simmered and used as a glaze for cooking some meats especially pork. Most recipe sites will have plenty of options for using up your berries.

Clearly, berry picking makes for a fun and pleasant summer day outside. Remember though, this is an outdoor activity. You and your family should be sure to wear hats and sunscreen while picking.
