Knowing how to administer medication to a sick pet is very important task that must be learned by a dog owner. Giving the dog a pill is a task that must be done until the pet gets well. Pilling the dog can be a daily routine too as similar to humans, dogs benefit from vitamins and supplements as well. So how do you give a dog a pill?
Giving the dog a pill can be a big hassle especially if the dog is a sly one that would give the owner a merry chase. Dogs are cunning animals so that even if the pill is hidden inside a treat, the treat will be eaten and the pill spewed out. Dogs do not know that if they take the pill, they would get well thus a pet owner has to find ways to make the task a little easier.
An owner would be fortunate to have a dog that would willingly take a pill. But as soon as the master’s back is turned, out the pill would go from the dog’s mouth. If your dog has this kind of attitude, the obvious thing that must be done is to watch the dog for while until you are sure that the pill was swallowed.
Another pilling technique is to disguise the taste of pill with the taste of food. This can be done by mixing a little amount of food with the crushed pill or with the liquid medication. However, this technique can only be done if the pet is not under dietary restriction. Dogs usually gobble their favorite foods thus; ham, liverwurst or chicken breast can be used to hide the pill.
It is common for very sick dogs to refuse food. If this is the case, mixing the pill to the food or hiding the pill in the dog’s favorite treat will be ineffective. The pill must be placed directly on the dog’s mouth. This technique would be easier if the dog is accustomed to being touched or to teeth brushing. The mouth must be opened so that the pill can be inserted at the base of the tongue. To prevent the dog from biting your hand, the teeth must be covered by the flews. Gently blow on the nose and rub the throat to encourage the dog to swallow the pill.
